Fortescue has shipped its 2.5 billionth tonne of iron ore, marking a significant milestone in the Company’s history.
Since loading its first vessel in 2008, Fortescue has grown into one of the world’s largest iron ore producers, exporting close to 200 million tonnes annually to customers worldwide.
Backed by a workforce of over 15,000 people, this milestone reflects the dedication and contribution of teams across Fortescue’s operations.
Will Lockyer from Port Operations, who was part of the team that loaded Fortescue’s first shipment, reflected on the Company’s journey.
“Everything was new. The team was learning as they went with a strong focus on getting it right and doing it safely. Today, operations are more refined, technology has advanced and safety has come a long way. But what stands out most is how our people have grown alongside the business,” he said.
“From just a handful of First Nations team members in the early days to many more across our crews today, it’s a reflection of how far we’ve come - not just in tonnes, but as a team and as a community.
“From sitting in the cab as the first ore came across the boom and loading that very first ship, to now standing here at 2.5 billion tonnes - it’s a full circle moment. One that reflects years of hard work from people right across the business. And that’s what this milestone is really about.”
